All but the very low-end PLC's have a lithium battery powered RealTime Clock to store year, date, week, day, hours, minutes, seconds...etc.

How could this be added to OpenPLC?

The UniPi platform has a RTC embedded, although currently the OpenPLC is not using this feature. For it to work properly, a function must be implemented to get the actual time. The OpenPLC already can work with TIME variables internally, and can even do math with time, but there is no way for it to get the actual time from the system.
